Things Other Than Porn To Enjoy on The Samsung Gear VR

For the past month, I’ve been playing around with the Samsung Gear VR headset. I’ve had plenty of friends come through my house each wanting to try it out, and immediately asking what the porn is like. After showing them the wonders of the future we start talking games and what else this device can do. I enjoyed a few Netflix movies on it, but the games and experiences are what hooked me. Here’s a look at some of my favorites.

Here’s a look at some of my favorites.

Oculus Arcade

Oculus Arcade offers classic games from Sega, Midway and Bandai Namco, all playable in the Samsung Gear VR. The games are in 2D but haven’t you always wanted to play Pac-Man in VR?

Oculus Social Beta

This game is really f’ing weird. You choose an avatar and then walk around talking with other people. You can talk to other players through your phone’s mic and watch Vimeo videos together.

It’s kinda creepy and I dig it. Think of it as a much more exciting Tinder?

Rose

This is a beautiful animated VR short that allows you to interact with it. I don’t want to spoil the story, so go try it out for yourself. It won’t take longer than 10 minutes.

NextVR

Not really a game but great for watching live stream events in 180 degrees. You can watch Nascar and eat your own hot dogs and drink cheap beer in a wife beater from the comforts of your couch.

Night Cafe

If you partake in a little 4/20 this games for you. The Night Cafe is a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh and his oil paintings. There isn’t much more to do than just walk around inside his paintings, but it’s a really trippy experience. For the full effect throw on some Radiohead and lose yourself for a few minutes.. or hours.

Gone

Gone is from the people who brought you a little show called, “The Walking Dead”. What else do you need to know? If you liked Rockstar’s LA Noire you will love this game.

Butts

I can picture Tina Belcher playing this or creating this in some weird Bob’s Burgers alternate reality universe. It’s $.99 and well worth it. It’s short, but you’ll definitely have a laugh. I don’t think I’ve experienced anything else quite  like it.

Land’s End

This is easily the most beautiful game I played. It’s essentially a slow, relaxing puzzle game set over five chapters. Fans of Firewatch and Witness will love it. This one is best played standing up.

Overall the game selection is limited, but there are plenty of apps and experiences showing off what the device will soon become as VR enters more households. I’d recommend getting a controller for it, as using the buttons on the side of the device can be a pain.

Also, props to the Samsung S7 for its outstanding battery life. I managed to easily use the VR device for 5 hours before even thinking about charging it.

I can’t wait to see what the future of VR holds, now to get my hands on a 360 camera!
