The Marvel brand is going from strength to strength in the entertainment industry as it continues to find a large audience around the globe. 2017 once again saw the release of three hugely successful films that demonstrate how the studio shows no sign of slowing down its production. The latest Avenger Infinity War trailer gave us the first glimpse of next year’s biggest film. It was reported that the trailer broke the record for the most views within 24 hours.
Marvel video games are also continuing to make waves across gaming communities. Marvel: Contest of Champions currently has over 100 million downloads. X-Men Legends, on the other hand, was recently credited by Destructoid as one of the greatest games in the world despite the fact that it was first released for consoles in 2004.
With the aforementioned success stories, it’s safe to say that Marvel is now a global phenomenon, and is influencing many industries. Today, Marvel isn’t only targeting its established fan base, but also the more mature demographic. Marvel now has several TV shows with dark and gritty settings through Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and The Punisher. The brand has also expanded to online gaming outlets with some companies incorporating Marvel-inspired games into their rosters. Online entertainment website Slingo hosts a number of games that are inspired by modern-day superheroes, with the game Thunderstruck sharing many similarities to the original Jack Kirby design of Thor. The Marvel version of Thor first appeared in 1962 and the latest film, Thor Ragnarok, is one of this year’s biggest hits. There are still a lot of Marvel movies in the pipeline, and perhaps more Marvel games will come out because of this consistent flurry of blockbusters.
Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at two of the most eagerly anticipated Marvel video games slated for release next year.
Spider-Man is an upcoming adventure game based on Peter Parker’s adventures. It is being developed with Insomniac Games and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. Spider-Man will be the first ever commercially-licensed game by Insomniac.
Spider-Man will feature a new storyline for the titular character that is not connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic books, or previous games. However, it will include many past elements including famous villains and characters such as the alternative Spider-man Miles Morales.
The game will be set in an open world, modern day New York City. Players will be able to utilize Spider-Man’s full set of skills including super strength, enhanced senses, web-slinging, wall-crawling, Parkour, as well as his other stealth abilities.
The game is set to be released in the first or second quarter of 2018.
Avengers Project is an upcoming game by Crystal Dynamics. According to IGN, the game will feature social, shared, and online play. The gameplay will follow a third person point of view.
Unfortunately, there are very little details about the game. Although it’s quite obvious that the game will be an action-adventure title, there is no information about the story, battle mechanics, as well as villains that The Avengers will be fighting against. The only detail that is known is that the game will be online-based, perhaps an MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game), considering that the game emphasizes a shared gameplay and a variety of modes and campaigns.
The Avengers Project still doesn’t have a solid release date either. All that’s known is that it will be released sometime in 2018.
