All Halo Games Are Going Be Backwards Compatible Soon

In a move that should come as no surprise Halo is getting some serious love this week. When I think of Xbox my mind immediately transports back to me experiencing Halo for the first time way back in 2001. Halo is one of my favorite shooters of all time, and the past few games have unfortunately not lived up to my high expectations. I haven’t given up hope, however. I still play the first three Halos periodically and can’t wait to experience them all again on the Xbox One X this fall. My fingers are crossed that we get a truly amazing Halo 6 sometime in the future.

Here’s what was announced today:

halo 5 4k

Halo 5 will receive a game update to support true 4K with the release of Xbox One X. Do I really wanna replay Halo 5, no not really, but 4K multiplayer does sound pretty sexy.

The update will be available later this year.

Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and Halo: CE Anniversary are joining over 300 backward compatible games later this year. I can’t wait to replay Halo 3. That game is legendary.

Each of these games will include campaign and multiplayer, and will even support LAN play on Xbox One – including LAN play between Xbox One and Xbox 360!

You can use your Xbox 360 disc or buy it digitally from the Microsoft store. Perhaps a wishlist and basket will be available by then. Wink wink Microsoft.

Don’t forget about Halo Wars 2. More exciting features are on the horizon which you can read about here. I didn’t really like the game but my co-hosts Ryan and Drew at Game-Moose loved it.

halo toys

Also included in the rather lengthy announcement was new toys! Yes please. Figures include Arbiter Thel ‘Vadam, Spartan Buck, Jerome-092, Atriox, and an Imperial Grunt as a ‘Build-a-figure’. They are available today.

Finally, the bad news. 343 Industries has the following to say about the 10 year anniversary of Halo 3.

Like most of you we’re also filled with a mix of emotions at the upcoming 10th anniversary of Halo 3 – “Wow, it’s been ten years!? I feel old” and “Damn Halo 3 was awesome” being two common examples. You’ll have a few different ways you can celebrate this momentous milestone – in addition to the eventual release of Halo 3 back-compat on Xbox One, the team is also planning a special Halo 3 Anniversary Throwback playlist for Halo 5. This new matchmaking offering is being built from scratch on a selection of incredible community-made Halo 3 maps created with Forge in Halo 5 and will feature “classic” gameplay settings. We’re also cooking up a fun commemorative live stream that should offer good times and a hearty helping of giveaways. Stay tuned!

Who’s excited about more Halo action? This will tide me over until the announcement of Halo 6.

Happy gaming my friends.
