Afterparty is the next game from the Oxenfree-developer Night School Studio.
Oxenfree was one of my top games of 2016 and this preview of Night School Studio’s new game, Afterparty looks very promising.
“In Afterparty, you are Milo and Lola,” says Night School, “recently deceased best buds who suddenly find themselves staring down an eternity in Hell.
“But there’s a loophole: outdrink Satan and he’ll grant you re-entry to Earth […] Time to go on the best bender ever, uncover the mystery of why you’ve been damned, and drink the big guy under the table”.
Night School is being mum on what exactly Afterparty will entail, but, IGN has managed to tease out a few more details. Afterparty is another narrative-focussed adventure in the same vein as Oxenfree, this time built around a night of pub crawling along the River Styx. Your ultimate goal is to sneak into Satan’s afterparty and drink your way out of Hell.
How fucking rad does this sound?!
It sounds like things will take a more traditional adventure game turn once you’re inside of a bar. Here, you’re able to switch between Lola and Milo, drinking and socializing at your leisure in order to progress the story, which will adapt to reflect your choices.
As an example of Afterparty’s puzzle side, there’s talk of different drinks imbuing your crew with different abilities to help on the journey toward salvation, some drinks lowering their inhibitions and others bolstering their confidence to tackle the job at hand. I’m pretty good at drinking in real life, let’s see how it translates virtually.
It’s currently penciled in for a 2019 release (UGH) but there’s a load of gorgeous concept art on Night School Studio’s website to peak your curiosity until a proper trailer drops sometime next year.
