Because of strict embargo rules, I’m not allowed to go into to much detail on Halo Wars 2 but I do have a few thoughts I can share with you. If you’d like to hear more check out the latest Game Moose podcast where Drew and I talk much more in-depth about it.
I wouldn’t consider myself a diehard Halo fan. I’ve beaten the first three games numerous times, Halo 4 and 5 I finished but didn’t love, read a few of the Halo books including Halo: The Flood, Halo: The Fall of Reach, and Halo: First Strike, I’ve seen Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, and have checked out the comics. I don’t know all the lore but I do know I love seeing Spartans in action. And Halo Wars 2 single player campaign has some solid fist-pumping moments that looks like it’s going please both newcomers and long-term fans.
Here’s what I think so far of the single player campaign (First three missions only):
Controls are as smooth as butter. D-pad shortcuts are fantastic
The Music. OMG The music is so good
A surprisingly deep and well thought out story
Cut-scenes are stunning
Excellent voice work
Banter between units is highly entertaining
Atriox is a great menacing villain
Sizeable missions that feel large but never large enough that you are feel bored watching your troops walk into battle
Some oddly ugly load screens that look like half-finished pieces of concept art
Not much of a challenge on Normal Difficulty (Granted these are early missions)
Quite a few bugs. Was forced to restart my Xbox multiple times during playing because of freezing.
I’ll have my final review on Thursday, February 16th and if you forgot or skipped the original Halo Wars here’s what you need to know. I have yet to really play multiplayer or try it out on the computer, but I shall in the next few days. Feel free to ask me questions in the comments below or on Twitter, I’m happy to answer what I can.
See you on the battlefield.
