What a year. Not only for gaming but for this very site. Thank you for reading and chatting with me on Twitter!
It means the world to me.
When I wasn’t on the internet I was playing the following games and picking my top 10 wasn’t easy. It was an incredible year. We got some of the best games of all time and making this list wasn’t easy. That’s why I poured a big strong glass of bourbon to reminisce about what touched me the most. There were a few stinkers but they were heavily overshadowed by some incredible games. Here’s to 2018 and more amazing single player games!
Let’s dive in!
The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
You probably know this already but Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s an absolutely incredible adventure that was a huge win for the Switch to launch with. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of elements introduced in this game in other games for years to come. If you haven’t played Zelda yet, what are you waiting for? I’m on my second playthrough now and after a 100+ hours I’m still finding new things to do. This game truly took my breath away. I’m sorry for that horrible joke… moving on….
Horizon Zero Dawn
I never thought the team behind Killzone would create such an amazing new property. Aloy, the main protagonist is incredible, and the story will have you hooked. I’m eager for a sequel, but the recent DLC did a good job wetting my appetite.
Super Mario Odyssey
I didn’t fall in love with Mario Odyssey until after I beat the game. That’s when the game really opens up. Now I can’t put it down. It’s the perfect pick up and play game and another stellar game on the Nintendo Switch. Now can we please get Super Mario Bros WiiU on the Switch?!
Night In The Woods
One of the best game I played all year. Think of it like a millennial depression simulator. The storytelling is spot on and the art style is gorgeous. If you like Life As Strange you’ll love Night In The Woods.
One part visual novel, one part NBA Jam. This game tells a really unique story where your choices have big consequences. I had so much fun playing this game and its replayability means I’ll be coming back in the near future. Give Pyre a shot. It’s a slam dunk.
You do not need to love or even like golf to thoroughly enjoy Golf Story. It takes the piss out of golf around every corner. Think of it like EarthBound meets Mario Golf with a ton of humor and heart and frisbee!
I went in expecting a good point and click game. What I got was one of the most wonderful point and click games of all time. This is a great homage to old LucasArts games that takes some strange twists and turns.
Cuphead, the game I liked so much I went and got it tattoed on my arm. That wasn’t as painful as how many times I died trying to beat the devil. This was the best Xbox exclusive in years and my go to game when friends come over.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Put on your best pair of headphones and spend your weekend playing Hellblade. This is one hell of a memorable game. It’s dark and tough to bear at times but the journey is worth it.
Cosmic Star Heroine
Honestly, this is one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played. It’s very much in the same vein as Chrono Trigger and it’s got one of the best soundtracks of the year. It’s lengthy but doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and was one of the most fun games of the year.
Runner-Up: Dream Daddy, Injustice 2, Little Nightmares
Best Expansion: Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels
If I had more time I’d probably include: Persona 5, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, Yakuza 0, Nioh
Big Surprise: Steamworld Dig 2, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Splatoon 2, The Nintendo Switch
Biggest Letdown: Destiny 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Friday the 13th, TellTale’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Worst Ending: Prey
Game I just don’t get: PlayerUnknown’s Battleground
